Project information
Desired outcomes and customer benefits
The project will contribute to a future-ready network by addressing the issue of LV network visibility. Improved visibility will reduce uncertainty and risk in network planning by helping us identify when and where network capacity is available. This will help ensure customers do not miss opportunities to connect their equipment to our network. It will also support regulatory compliance and increase network resilience through improved load and voltage management, operational insights, and proactive fault finding.
Changes to the project scope or intended outcomes
During the project, Northpower discovered an opportunity to use smart meter analytics to detect public safety risks, such as live lines down. New design standards for transformer upgrades were developed, using ADMD calculated from smart meter data.
Key insights and lessons learned
Smart meter data analytics has delivered LV network visibility quickly, using a small core team and requiring minimal in-house software development. Privacy and data-use considerations have slowed progress in some areas and have been an important lesson throughout the project. The efficiencies and cost savings achieved have helped offset the costs associated with data and analytics.
