Project information
Project overview
In May 2025, Aurora put out a call to flexibility service providers and large businesses in the Queenstown and Upper Clutha areas who could help with non-network capacity support during peak times on our network.
Flexibility solutions are a non-network solution relying on DER and other controllable loads to shift, reduce or turn off non-essential energy use and make better use of the existing network.
It met with more than 20 respondents, ranging from battery energy storage system (BESS) providers to household aggregators.
Suitable applicants were invited to submit a full request for proposal. It also provided feedback to other applicants so they can participate in ongoing procurement rounds.
Innovation challenge or opportunity
Non-network solutions allow for smarter, more flexible alternatives to traditional infrastructure upgrades and will help make sure we’re meeting the future needs of our communities. As electricity use evolves with increased uptake of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) like electric vehicles, solar generation, and battery storage, networks must adapt.
Desired outcomes and customer benefits
Aurora believes this flexibility programme will lay the foundations for a dynamic, price-led, dispatch of flexibility services.
Progress made
Aurora has provisioned for flexibility tariff rebates in the FY27 price setting, and are contracting suitable flexibility service providers for winter 2026.
Key insights and lessons learned
Flexibility can be paid for via pricing rebates within the current regulatory framework.
